Worlds without end the emptiest parts of the life span crows and ravens prey on
frozen, hungry brown bears as if it could smash through solid rock
an eye on some freakist, million-to-one

I read about the lives of desperate, brilliant, lonely men
men who died alone lived alone fucked alone
and I know that I am one of them and it makes me happy
I think the poem resembles Charles Bukowski too much. I almost didn't post it, for that reason. But it came out of a genuine feeling, on my part, and I like it. I guess I don't mind the resemblance because most of my work is radically different from that of Buk.
That said, Charles Bukowski is one of my favorite writers. I also think that he got better with age: though I like his early work, I think 'You Get so Alone at Times that it Just Makes Sense' and 'Last Night of the Earth Poems' are his best collections of poetry, and that 'Ham on Rye', 'Women' and 'Pulp' are his best novels. I really think he matured beautifully in the eighties, in particular. 'Hollywood' is also hilarious, and beautifully controlled. 'Pulp', his last novel, is criminally underrated. It's one of the funniest books I've ever read, a brilliant parody of the hard-boiled detective genre, and the last chapter is one of the most beautiful and haunting things I've ever read.
Charles Bukowski has gotten me through some rough nights. In fact, he is one of the very few authors (Blaise Cendrars, a very different writer, is another) who can make me smile when things are at their worst.
